Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
BrightStep is a supplemental learning app for children in grades 1-8, used under a parent or guardian account. We take children's privacy seriously and collect only what is needed to run the app. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
Who the account is for
Only a parent or legal guardian (18+) creates and controls the account. Children do not create accounts, do not log in on their own, and are never asked for personal information directly. A child is simply a profile the parent adds.
What we collect
- Parent account: your email address and password (for signing in).
- Child profile: a first name and grade level only, chosen by you.
- Learning activity: the progress, points, streaks, and answers needed to run the daily check-in and show you progress.
We do notcollect a child's email, photos, precise location, or any free-text that is shared with other users. There are no social features and no child-to-child or child-to-stranger contact.
How we use it
We use this information solely to provide the learning experience, track progress, and let you monitor your child from the parent dashboard. We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
You provide verifiable parental consent when you create the account and confirm you are the parent or guardian. You can review, edit, or remove your child's information at any time from the grown-up dashboard, or by contacting us. You may withdraw consent by deleting the account.
Removing a child profile
Removing a profile hides it immediately and frees the slot. We keep the underlying data for 30 days so you can restore it if the profile was removed by mistake. After that it is permanently deleted, including all progress, answers and rewards. Removing is done from the grown-up dashboard behind your PIN, so a child cannot do it. If you want a profile erased immediately rather than after 30 days, email us and we will do it.
Security & storage
Data is stored with row-level security so that a family's data is only accessible to that family's account.
If your subscription ends
Access to the app stops, but we keep your family's data for 12 months so that resubscribing picks up exactly where you left off: same progress, same streaks, same stars. We email you at 6, 9 and 11 months to remind you it is there and to tell you the exact date it will be deleted. After 12 months it is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
Replying to any of those emails is enough to have it kept for longer, and you can ask us to delete it sooner at any time, including right now, before the 12 months are up.
