Is BrightStep worth it? Including who it is not for

What it is
A short daily learning check-in for children in grades 1 through 8. Six subjects (Reading, Math, Writing, Science, Life Skills and Move) totalling about ten minutes. Difficulty adapts to each child. Points earned by finishing unlock character avatars.
You set screen-time caps from a PIN-protected parent dashboard, and the app enforces them against itself. It is built to end rather than to hold attention.
$25 a month or $250 a year, covering every child in the family. Seven-day free trial. No free tier, no advertising, nothing sold to your child inside the app.
Who it suits
Families where the failure is consistency rather than resources. You have good material and it goes unused, and the daily negotiation is the exhausting part.
Families with several children at different grades, where running something manually for each of them is the thing that collapses first.
Parents who want the session to end. If you are already fighting about screen time, an app that pushes a child off is a different proposition from one that does not.
Who should not buy it
If your child is genuinely behind, spend on a person first. This is maintenance practice; it will not diagnose a misconception or teach a concept from scratch. Buying it instead of tutoring costs you months.
If money is tight, use Khan Academy. It is free, it is excellent, and we would rather say so than take $25 you needed elsewhere.
If your child is under grade 1, or past grade 8, it is the wrong tool. And if they are already engaged with something that works, changing it is a downgrade dressed as an upgrade.
What it does not do
It does not teach. There are no video lessons and no explanations of new concepts. It practises things a child has met.
It does not replace school or a homeschool curriculum. It is supplementary by design and would be a worse product if it tried to be more.
It does not go past grade 8, and it will not match your district's exact teaching sequence. Standards alignment means questions are tagged to specific codes, not that the order matches your school.
How to decide in a week
Start the trial and change nothing else. Put it after the snack and before screens, and do not sit with them.
By day seven you are looking at one thing: are they opening it without being asked? Not whether their maths improved: a week is far too short for that, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling.
If they are not opening it, cancel. You can do that in two clicks from the parent dashboard, and there is no argument about it.

No, only the seven-day trial. A free tier would mean either advertising to children or withholding the parent view, and we would rather do neither.
Will BrightStep help a child who is behind?
It supports the fix but is not the fix. If a child does not understand the material, a person is what changes that. Practice alone becomes repeated failure.
How do I cancel?
Two clicks from the parent dashboard, any time. Cancelling during the trial means no charge at all.
