Add, remove, or bring back a child profile
For parents setting up BrightStep for the first time, or making room for another child.
Adding a child
- Log in. You land on the profile picker, under the heading "Who's learning today?"
- Tap "Add a learner", the card with the plus sign.
- Type a first name (20 characters or fewer) and pick a grade from 1 to 8. That's the whole form.
- The new profile appears on the picker right away. Your child taps it to start.
A first name and a grade is all we ask for, on purpose. No birthday, no photo, no email for the child. Kids never log in. They tap their name on a device you've already signed into.
Pick the grade they're in now, not the one they're strongest at. Every question in the bank is written for one specific grade, so a 4th grader and a 5th grader get different material, not the same set with bigger numbers. Difficulty inside a grade adjusts on its own.
How many profiles one account can hold
Eight. If you reach it, the form says "Accounts are limited to 8 child profiles. Remove one to add another." That's well above any real family. The cap exists so one subscription can't get passed around a class group chat.
Changing a name or a grade
There's no edit button yet. If you misspelled a name or your child moved up a grade, email ervin@brightstepchild.com from the account email and say what to change. We fix it on our side, usually within a couple of days, and nothing about their progress moves.
Don't remove and re-add a profile to change the grade. That creates a new child with zero stars and an empty history.
Removing a profile
- Tap "Grown-up ◆" at the top of the profile picker and enter your PIN.
- Scroll to that child's section. The last panel is "Remove" with their name on it. Tap "Remove profile".
- It asks you by name and reminds you their progress, streak and stars are kept. Tap "Yes, remove" to confirm.
Nothing is erased. The profile leaves the picker and frees a slot. Every day of progress, every star and every reward request stays exactly where it was.
There's no remove button on the kids' side of the app, and that's deliberate. It used to be one tap on the profile picker, which put a younger sibling one tap away from wiping someone else's whole history. Now it lives behind your PIN and asks you by name first.
Bringing a profile back
- In the grown-up area, find the panel called "Recently removed". It only shows up when there's something to restore.
- Each removed child shows how many days are left. Tap "Restore".
You've got 30 days. Restoring brings back every day of progress, streak, stars and rewards exactly as they were. After 30 days the profile is purged for good.
If the account is already at 8 profiles, restore won't go through until you free a slot.
Common questions
Can my kids share one profile?
Better not to. Progress, difficulty and the daily set are all per child. If two kids share a profile, the app can't tell which one keeps missing fractions, and the difficulty ladder moves on their combined answers instead of either child's. Profiles are free, so give each child their own.
Does my child need their own email or login?
No. Children never log in. You sign in once on the device and they tap their name on the picker. That's also why the parent PIN exists: it keeps the grown-up area closed on a tablet the kids use.
What happens to their data when I remove a profile?
For 30 days, nothing. The profile is hidden and everything behind it stays put so you can restore it. After 30 days it's purged, including progress, stars and reward history. If you want it gone sooner, email us.
Still stuck?
Email goes straight to a person, usually answered within a couple of days. Include the email you signed up with so we can find your account.
